Dinner fit for a Valentine

The Husband out did himself today with this yummy dinner for his special Valentine....ME!

Pan-seared duck breast in blackberry sauce, kale with shallots and parmesan, and the cutest little mashed potato rosettes....it was delicious! We washed it down with this..........

Best meal in town tonight was at our house!

The Road to 10

It started on January 26, 2002, but we didn't meet her until March.

How could we resist this face.

With BIG brother Tyson(Mr. Wrinkly Pants)

She loved him.

Very, very much.

He taught her to play.

She grew up.

On Dec 5th 2002 she lost her best friend, Tyson. She was very depressed.

So we got her an Edgrrr for Christmas.

She taught him to play.

She showed him her stuff in agility.

Then we packed them both up and moved from Chicago to Florida.

On Feb 20th 2011 she lost her second best friend, Edgrrr.

On August 22nd 2011 she lost a leg to cancer. But she's a survivor

.........and today is her 10th Birthday

Sweetheart, may you have many more!

2 Weeks In

I can't believe we are already 2 weeks into 2012! It seems all I have been doing is working, working and well, more work.

Lily has been doing just great! She had a check up on the 3rd and everything is good. Her puncture wound is still not healed all the way ( I guess the chemo slows healing) but it's getting there. Now that all the chemo and antibiotics are pretty much out of her system she is much more playful and energetic. She is even cutting through the tiled kitchen floor to get to the backdoor rather than going the long way through the living room. And she has been chewing her rawhides! Sometimes it's the little things that make you smile!

We are looking forward to her 10th birthday on the 26th. I told her we would make a meatloaf for her special day..................she is waiting with anticipation.

In between all the working I've been doing, I have managed to work on some of my New Year's goals. I have worked out more these past 2 weeks but didn't get any walking time in this week as The Husband was out of town and I was too tired to motivate myself in the evening(sometimes a partner helps).

I have managed to reduce my stash by a few yards by sending some cute dog fabric over to Dachsies with Moxie who is making a quilt for Sandra at KissABulls who lost 5 of her precious dogs in a house fire. I am also working on another sewing project that I do not have pictures of yet but have used up about 5 1/4yds on it. It is an ongoing project so should use up a lot more. And believe me there is plenty more to use up!

I have not reduced my credit card debt by any more than my monthly payment so far. But I also have not added to it, so that is a good thing.

I still have not made the perfect pair of pants.

It's time for me to go park my fanny in my recliner and enjoy what is left of the NFL season. My picks for the super bowl match up this year......Green Bay and Denver.......a girl can dream!

Resolution

resolve: to reach a firm decision about.

Do you make resolutions? I don't, they usually come back to ~~bite you in the a$$~~, haunt you. But this year I am setting a few goals for myself.

1) Reduce my fabric stash. It is out of control and taking over. I have a plan I will share at a later date.

2) Be more active. Walk after dinner at least once a week whether The Husband is home or not. Bike, hike or kayak at least once a month. We live in a beautiful area and need to enjoy the resources it has to offer.

3) Reduce our credit card debt. We got hit with a lot of costly surprises this year - Eddy's illness, The Husband's 3 surgeries (1 major, 2 minor), Lily's surgeries and treatments and car issues. It has really added up.

4) Make the perfect pair of pants. This maybe the hardest one to achieve!

That's it! Nothing I can't handle. I'll assess my progress on a quarterly basis. Should be totally manageable or it will all come back to ~~bite me in the a$$~~ haunt me!

Here's to hoping that 2012 is better than 2011.........................

Twas' the day before Christmas..........

Lily soaks up some rays waiting for Santa.

She won't get many presents with a scowl like that!

There's that big Rottie grin....and she has a lot to grin about. A week ago her Vet was worried because she was very anemic when she came in for her chemo treatment and we were having trouble getting her to eat. They postponed the session and suggested we take her back to her surgeon for an ultrasound and a possible bone marrow biopsy. Uh oh, had the cancer spread? Her lungs were clear but it could have spread elsewhere.

Well, The Husband and I did a little thinking and put together a timeline scenario to see when she started not eating. The week before she had punctured her stump and opened a wound. They put her on an antibiotic called 'Baytril' which is good for wounds like hers. Soon after that she started getting really fussy about eating. So The Husband did a little internet research and found out in very rare cases this drug can cause anemia.

The Vet wasn't convinced but we all thought it best to remove her from it. Just 24hours after stopping it she was a NEW dog! Eating, running, talking up a storm and just being Lily.

The Husband still took her for the ultrasound which was negative and had her blood retest. The red count went from 23 to 33 in just 3 days! No bone marrow biopsy needed.

We all know our pets best and when they start acting different at home we can provide a timeline of events leading up to issues with them. If you have a good vet they will listen (we do) and take this into consideration. It also pays to do research on your own. Your vet can't know everything about food and drug interactions.

Our little princess had her last chemo treatment yesterday. Her wound is finally healing and she got the wreath off her head. She goes back once a month for checkups now.

We know not everyone chooses this route with their pets and sometimes you can't, but we are very glad we did and hope Lily makes it well past her 10th birthday (Jan 26th).

We wish Eddy's treatment had been more successful and miss him very much this holiday season but are grateful for what we have.

Lily Update

I discovered a pressure puncture on poor Lily's stump. I will not give you the gory details but she is now sporting several staples and this:

Yes, her very own Christmas wreath for the next week!

Needless to say she is not a happy camper.

But she is a trooper and tries to keep a smile on her face!

Even when it makes for awkward times when doin' your Business!

Lily has been doing very well. She finished her 4th round of chemo just after Thanksgiving. She also got to spend time with other doggies at the Canine Discovery Center for a few days over Thanksgiving. We hated leaving her but could not take her with us to our friends place in central Florida. But because it is run by her Vet she got extra special attention from all her friends there.

I think she has 2 more treatments, then what I don't know. We just keep our fingers crossed that she stays cancer free. We will be celebrating her 10th birthday in January which we weren't sure would happen a few months ago....so all is good!

I'm Getting Fat!

And it's The Husband's fault. Just look at what he made for dinner Saturday night:

Oysters Rockafeller made with fresh Appalachicola oysters).

Gone in sixty seconds (I only had 6)! AND:

Prince Edward Island mussels in a garlic wine sauce. Yes this is just my bowl....I ate them all but 2, one was cracked and the other didn't open. Both dishes were DELISH!

Then on Sunday night he made this:

Lobster Mac n' Cheese. That is all claw meat that he carefully removed from the shell. This was a good dish, but frankly I like his cajun crawfish mac n' cheese better. I really think lobster is best served steamed or grilled with just a side of butter for dunking.

I contributed to our meals by eating everything on my plate and setting the table with this lovely centerpiece:

Even Lily helped by cleaning up any crumbs that may have found their way on to the floor. I'm sure there weren't many.

The Husband really needs to learn how to make a simple soup and salad don't you think?

Seems everyone had their patterns on sale last weekend. I couldn't resist, the force was too strong....so I splurged.

New Look. I don't know why but I love New Look patterns. These are not new releases but I have wanted them for a long time and finally broke down:

These are great blouses for our hot summers in Florida.

I am on a skirt kick lately. While similar I think these can all be unique in their own way.

McCalls/Butterick: They had an incredible sale, $1.99 ($1.69 for Club members). Who could resist!

I think this top pattern is new or I just over looked it before.

Again with the skirts, what can I say. It looks like the grandniece is getting some too.

LantzLiving: Love her vintage patterns, which these are not but again they are skirts.

I really need to get sewing and quit buying patterns. I've promised not to buy any more.....this year! Good think it is already December.

Lily sleeps in.

Lily has been doing great! She will have her 4th chemo session this coming Weds. We have found a combination of vitamins and antibiotics the week after her sessions that make her bounce back quickly from any side effects.

She has been playful, chewing bones and although she doesn't want to eat her KD prescription diet any longer, she will eat anything else I put in front of her with zest. I figure at the moment it is better to just keep her eating!

This Thanksgiving we will morn the loss of Edgrr but be thankful for our time with him. We will be thankful for still having Lily with us and to her Vet and medical staff for working so hard to help her and being so kind to us. We will be thankful for all of our family and friends, local and on the internet, for their thoughts and prayers.

We will be thankful for our jobs and the roof over our head. We will be thankful to be of this world and living in what is still in my eyes, the greatest country in the world.

In other words, we will be thankful for a lot.

Lily had a good and bad check-up this week. Good news is that so far it looks like the cancer has not spread. Her chest x-ray was clean. But her red blood count was down again, so we are waiting another week for the next round of chemo. Her vet and advisors at the Univ. of Florida say it's nothing to be too concerned about, just to be monitored.

She is a little bummed right now because The Husband is out of town and she misses him as do I. But here she is basking in the glow of a pretty good checkup!

Lily Update (sorry no pictures)

Lily had another blood test today and although her levels were very good she is anemic. So now she has vitamins and is getting a little extra liver treat with meals. Other than that she looks good, at a slim 100lbs even.

She is scheduled for another round of chemo next week and they will do a blood test prior just to be sure. She will also have a chest x-ray soon to check on any spreading.

She has a new friend in the neighborhood, a beautiful German Shepherd named Max that our neighbors adopted. Lily doesn't get along with many dogs, but Max was a perfect gentleman and she was smitten.

Just quick update on the princess. Her blood test yesterday was perfect so they went ahead and did another round of chemo. She handles it very well, no nausea at all. She goes back for another blood test next Friday and if all is good another chemo round 11 days from then. Her vet says she looks great!

Bad News/Good News/Bad News

Bad news: Lily had her blood test this past Tuesday. Her white count was very low, around 2400. The vet is a little concerned but not overly as this is sometimes expected with this chemo. She has been put on antibiotics to protect her from infection and another blood test is scheduled for this Tuesday. Her next chemo treatment has been postponed a week or two.

Good news: She is doing really great! Eating and being her normal stubborn self. Smiling and even doing a little Rottie back talkin'.

Bad news: Gizmo over at Rottrover has recently been diagnosed with osteosarcoma. As they have all been so supportive of us we were heartbroken to hear that yet another Rottie has been stricken with cancer. We will keep them in our thoughts that Gizmo's remaining days are pain free and happy.

My sister got married (for the first time) in the fall of 1971, I was 15. It was my second wedding that year (my oldest brother got married for the first and only time) in the spring. But this was my sister, I was so excited, after only one clothing class in H.S. I was going to make my own bridesmaid dress! This is the pattern she chose:

It was made from simple cotton yellow gingham and fully lined. I did need a little help with putting in the zipper on this style of dress (thank you, Aunt Virgie) but aside from that I did it. The other girls had to have someone make it for them.

This is the only picture I can find of something that I made in my early sewing years. I do not like to have my picture taken but I am glad that I have this one!

This has been one of those weeks at work. Can you say computer crash with no current backup, can you say corrupted Quickbooks data file? It is amazing how a plastic box can bring a company to its knees! I have spent the last 2 days rebuilding data from our last good backup (8/31). Monday the IT guy is coming with a new machine (we run a 3-machine network) and we are redoing our years old network setup. Hopefully by Tuesday we will be close to normal (my fingers and any other flexible appendage are crossed).

I had hoped to have a jacket from this pattern finished this week:

I am making it from a black cotton pique. I made a muslin a few weeks ago and the fit was perfect. So far it is turning out very nice. Maybe I can get in a few minutes this weekend and get it finished by the end of the week. I have lots of things I want to get started on for fall/winter as I got some nice fabric in the mail about a week ago.

On a more positive note, Lily had her first chemo treatment this week and is doing great! No ill side-effects and she is learning to maneuver better each day.......in fact she is back to charging dogs on the TV......not necessarily a good thing. But we are just glad she is happy, pain free and being herself.

Hello TS Lee!

Yesterday we had a little rain ( well by Florida standards it was little) and LOTS of wind. Today TS Lee has started its turn from Louisiana back NE across land and it is pulling moisture off the Gulf like no ones business. And since we are to the east of Louisiana, today we are getting rain and lots of it (even by Florida standards).

This large bowl is on our back patio. It is about 6in deep. I was out at 5:30 this morning before the rain started and it was empty.....it is now overflowing.

We are waiting for a break in the deluge that should come around 10:30 so that we can get Lily out for her morning "Business". She hated going out in the rain when she had 4 legs.........she certainly does not want to go out in it now that she only has 3!

This weather should be like this off and on for the remainder of the holiday weekend. Good time to get some sewing done....................

Thank you all so much!

Thank you, thank you, thank you so much for all the well wishes and furry hugs for Lily. They really helped brighten her and my days. A special thanks to Bart, Gizmo and Ruby over at Rottrover for sending the Power of the Paw our way. It is truly appreciated.

Lily had her checkup today. She is healing nicely, the stitches are out and the surgeon did a very good job. She is adapting and getting around quite well for a 100+ pound dog on 3 legs. She has been a little depressed (who wouldn't be!) but really perked up for her outing to the vet. She is quite exhausted now.

She will have her first chemo treatment on September 13th and on we will go from there. At the moment if all goes well we are looking at 5-6 treatments at 3 week intervals. We can only hope for the best.

I will make sure and visit everyone to offer my personal thanks but again, thank you all so much. I can't tell you how much your comments meant to us.

Road to Recovery

Dogs are amazing. Lily had her surgery Monday afternoon. We brought her home Tuesday afternoon. I was heartbroken when I saw her......what had we done. She was still suffering the effects of the anesthesia and it took 4 of us to get her in the back of my Jeep. We purchased a sling harness for large dogs but I was still worried just the 2 of us wouldn't be able to handle her when we got home.

But we got her out without incident. That night The Husband and I slept on the floor with her. She really enjoyed that....everytime I took my hand off her back she scooted back closer to me, her way of saying 'don't stop'.

Every day she showed amazing improvement. When the UPS man came she ran a few feet to the foyer (stopping where the carpet ends and tile begins....are they smart or what?) and waited to see what he brought. She is standing on her own to do her 'business', with Mom or Dad nearby in case she teeters too far.

We will find out more about our next course of action next week. But she is definitely on the Road to Recovery!

Nobody Ever Said Life Was Fair.................

And it's not. After losing our little boy, Edgrrr to lymphoma in February we have now learned that Lily has bone cancer. It is centered on her front left leg at the paw and leg juncture. We have consulted with our vet, who in turn consulted with others including one at the University of Florida. And while there is a somewhat experimental bone grafting procedure the consensus to relieve her pain and prolong her life is amputation.

We are not strangers to cancer or amputation. Our second Rottie, Echo had a nasty tissue to tissue cancer in a rear leg. We knew she had less than a 50/50 chance but the procedure gave her 10 good months. A front leg is a bit more difficult for deep chested big dogs, but they adapt.

It is not something we do lightly. But she deserves a chance at another 2 years, maybe more if we get lucky.

She has a consult with the surgeon on Monday, we are hoping they can do it Tuesday. There is no evidence it has spread to her lungs yet and there is a chance with the weakened bone she could break it, so the sooner the better.

These darn Rotties and their cancers.......but you gotta love em'.

Lily Big Ears.

The Knit is Still My Enemy

It's been almost 2 years since I tackled sewing with knits. I decided it was time to try again. So I took this pattern:

And made this:

It's not too bad but I still have an issue with my stitches. The side seams aren't bad, and the back neck had bias for a little more support but the front neckline and bottom hem stitches still come out all wonking. It doesn't make any difference if I use the so called "stretch" stitch on the machine or a regular straight stitch. At least the front neckline folds in on itself and really can't be seen. And I doubt anyone is going to be staring at the hem, the print is busy enough to hide it. I didn't want to take any chances with hemming the arms so just left them unstitched.

I love this top, it looks really flattering on me. I cut a straight Size 12 and the only adjustment I made was taking the length up 1". It is very long and the tunic version even longer. I would love to make a few more sleeveless and 3/4" length versions. I think I am going to try a matte jersey knit next, this slippery 'ITY' stuff is a PITA to work with, luckily it is the last piece in my stash.

Oh yes and I made it in a day, a few hours all total from cutting it out to picture. For me that is an accomplishment!

4 Sorbettos, all in a row

You already saw #1 in a previous post but here it is again.

I had some fit issues with this one that were entirely my own fault by cutting it out on the incorrect sizing lines (they need to make 10x reading glasses for this stuff. I don't know how people can use the Burda patterns without making a mistake!). This was made in the standard Sorbetto with front pleat and has self-made matching bias trim. It's a little snug across the bust (FIRST time I have ever had that issue) but it is wearable and I do like it. I have worn it once already. Here is a close-up of fabric and bias trim.

Sorbetto # 2:

I only had about a yard of this fabric but really thought it was a nice print to go with jeans. I got rid of the front pleat and had to cut the back in 2 pieces rather than on a fold, making a scant 1/4inch seam. I thought it looked a little plain so I made the little front placket and added the buttons. It has purchased bias trim. The fit was better on this one and I have already worn it once. Here is a close-up of fabric, trim and buttons (these buttons are actually on backwards, I liked the pearlized underside better than the top):

Sorbetto # 3:

This one is my favorite. I just love this fabric and even though the background is a dark navy intend on wearing this with black jeans. The fit on this one, after a little tweaking, is perfect. It is a standard Sorbetto with contrasting self-made bias. I have not worn it yet, but plan to next week. Here is a close-up of the fabric and contrasting bias:

Sorbetto #4:

This is my second favorite. The print is black and grey on bright white. It is a standard Sorbetto with front pleat, self-made contrasting bias and 3 black mismatched buttons. The bias trim really contrasts on this one while #3 was a more subtle contrast so as not to fight the busyness of the print. This print cried out for a little more zing. I have not worn it yet (just finished sewing on the buttons an hour ago) but plan to next week. Here is a close-up of the fabric, contrasting bias trim and buttons:

There is actually a Sorbetto #5 cut out and sitting on the work pile. As with #2 I had less than a yard of fabric so it will have no pleat and a seamed back. But I am a little burnt out on making these at the moment but will come back to it shortly.

This is a great pattern and like many other sewists out in blogland I have been smitten with Sorbetto Fever! I am sure I will continue to come back to this pattern time and again.

Kayaking Alaqua Creek

The rain finally let up so that we could do our first group kayak with Choctawhatchee Chapter of The Florida Trail Association (of which we are new members) on Saturday, July 30th. It was a beautiful day clear but hot, oh well this is Florida in mid-summer.

We started out with the meet up at the south launch.

The creek was like a mirror, with nar'ly a ripple.

More yakers arrive and prepare for launch.

I was so impressed with this elderly lady in the group. She came by herself and had an inflatable kayak.

This was our first time on a small creek/river with our kayaks. We usually go on the bay, bayous and gulf. It was a lot of fun and very quiet and tranquil the farther up stream we went. We couldn't go all the way with the group because it got difficult to maneuver our 14ft yaks the farther up we went. Some went about a mile more before heading back.

We took our time leisurely paddling back to the launch. The only wild life we really saw were large jumping bass and a VERY, VERY large HAIRY spider in a web in a branch that we had to go under. I could have done without that.

After the paddle we all met up at a local restaurant for a late lunch. I had local fried mullet and frog legs.....yum!

These skooter skirts were all the rage back when I was in high school. We loved them because they were short and somewhat modest at the same time. I made View 1 in brown tweed in 1972 I think. Very stylish with knee socks....(do they still make knee socks? do girls still wear knee socks? Yikes! I'm getting old!)

We live in a small town in NW Florida. Aside from chinese, thai and korean, the variety of ethnic food is somewhat limited. Coming from a diverse area like Chicago this can be a problem at times when you get a hankrin' for something. Have no fear, The Husband to the rescue:

Homemade falafel, homemade pitas and homemade cucumber tahini sauce. He didn't make the feta, olives or grow the veggies....what a slacker ;)

Issues ....I've got issues

I don't know who's blog I saw it on but they made Colette Patterns Sorbetto tank top. It was adorable and it was a free download. So off I went.......

After taping the pieces together I was going to copy the size I needed but for the life of me these old trifocaled eyes could not see the lines through the tissue paper. So I decided to just go ahead and cut out the size I needed from the paper pattern.

In reading over their size chart I was a little surprised that I would cut a size 2 (Bust 34). I know they are an independent pattern house and not the one of the larger commercial brands but I was still a little concerned. I decided to go up one size to a 4 (Bust 35). I also cut the length at the size 10 because I like my tops a little longer.

The top just looked small to me as I was sewing the seams. Once I got the seams done I held it up to me....uhoh. I am surprised I could get it on.....I know they say they have less ease in their patterns but I looked like 10lbs of sausage stuffed in a 5lb casing! It was also shorter than I like even after adding length. I was so disappointed because: 1) I really like the fabric (it goes so well with a pair of cargo pants I bought months ago, that I have nothing to wear with) and 2) everyone always raves about the fit of Collette patterns. I'm note sure what went wrong where.

Not to be defeated I was determined to try and save this cute little top. Getting out of it was my first hurtle....I looked like Edward Norton in 'Fight Club', beating the crap out of myself to get this thing off! But I won, and off it came.

I took out all the seams and resewed them at a scant 1/4". It is still a little snug in the bust but I think it is wearable. Here she is with the bias facings on yet:

The flowers are shades of lavender and purple with tan, not green leaves. I was going to make the bias out of a lavender tonal print, but I think I will just use the same floral fabric.

I have already made my adjustment notes and because this is a simple top they weren't that complicated. So fit issues aside I really like this top. It sews up quick and the pleat adds a little interest. You can embellish it or make it even simpler by taking out the pleat. I know I plan on making more.

In high school we called these 'elephant bells'. I made the red version out of the softest wide wale corduroy I have ever touched. They were a deep navy blue and so low slung that you had to wear a bodysuit with them so you didn't show any 'teen crack'. It was 1971.....I am surprised my Mother let me out of the house in these........I am more surprised my Father let me back in.

WARNING: These bellbottoms can be hazardous to your health. The flare was so wide on these that going down the school stairs one day between classes someone behind me (or maybe it was me?) stepped on my pants.......me and 3 others in front of me went down like bowling pins. Luckily it was only about 3-4 stairs. Ah, the price we pay for fashion................

Better Late Than Never

I present Simplicity 3786 (hopefully I get a better picture later wearing it). Since it has been well over a month since I began this garment, let me refresh your memory. This is the pattern and fabric:

I did View F. It has been eons since I've sewn pintucks and I didn't find their instructions very clear, so I kind of winged it. They looked good enough to impress The Husband. Other than that it worked up easily.

It's an okay top. I have never been a big tunic gal, but they seem to be everywhere this year and thought I would give one a try. The pintucks do add interest and the elastic insert in the back keeps it from being too blousey. My cotton may be a little too stiff as it still poufs out in front for that much sought-after maternity look. I am hoping a few washings will soften in up a little.

One thing I don't like is the band collar. It's too big and sticks up. If I ever make this again I would make the collar half the size.

All in all, it's okay and it's DONE! Time to move on.......nothing here to see...........

Kayaking Choctawhatchee Bay

We were able to get the yaks out for a few hours this morning.

I have matched my outfit to my yak.

The Husband has also matched his outfit to my yak.

Does this hat make me look....ridiculous?

Exploring the bayous and inlets is very relaxing.

Out on the open bay. The water is so shallow and clear here you can see the bottom in this picture.

One of the nice things about kayaking around here is the wildlife. The Husband was able to get a picture of this Osprey chick peeking over the nest. There are actually 2 chicks in there and Mom and Dad were taking turns feeding them.

I also saw 2 pods of dolphins no more than 75ft from me. Unfortunately The Husband missed them and I didn't have my camera with me. They are so amazing to see up close in the wild like that, just swimming.

The mullet were also jumping like crazy too! I was hoping one or two would jump in the yak. For those of you who don't know what a mullet is aside from a bad haircut, it is a fish. They are vegetarians so you can only catch them with nets. They are very tasty. But alas, none found their way on board.

It was nice to get out as it has been awhile since we have gone kayaking. Even though it was already stifling hot with the sun beating down on our heads, there was an ever so slight breeze. But just seeing the wildlife around us made it all worth it.

On the Sew Again

I have finally gotten back in the mood to do a little sewing for myself. Since I am hoping to shed a few pounds while The Husband is wired shut and I am fending for myself (I have already dropped 1.5lbs......probably those donuts we had earlier in the week!) I don't want to jump back in with anything major just yet. So here are my choices:

First up McCall's 5248. I made the bathrobe a year ago and love it. This time around I could use some summer pajamas. These are all cotton fabrics, the green is going to be the shorts and the top will be a combination of the print and peach solid. I haven't worked out the exact details, but with summer already in full swing here in the FL Panhandle this will be perfect for hot, humid nights.

Next up is Simplicity 3786 in view E (with the capped sleeves) in this light blue and yellow floral. I saw a similar sleeveless tunic in the Chadwick's catalog that I really loved and I have a beautiful blue, white and black cotton print in my stash that would be perfect. But it's been awhile since I have done pintucks so I am going to make this my wearable muslin. I'm not a huge fan of tunics but I do love pintucks and this looks like it will be very nice and cool.

Last in line is New Look 6677....gee, did I just say I wasn't a huge fan of tunics???? I am also not a big purple/lavender fan....but what the heck, I'm in a stash burning mode. I am not sure which view to make. My first choice is View E (sleeveless with major banding) but that neckline on the model is lower than I like and I and not sure if I am capable of redrafting this. My second choice is View C, the white sleeveless, which is actually less tunic looking. The neckline is more to my liking and I can still use the solid for the front placket and banded collar. I could also make bias from the solid and use it around the armholes and side vents. Jury is still in deliberations.

Anyway, I am happy to be back in the sewing saddle. Hopefully I won't fall off again. Time to get cuttin'.

PetSmart had a sale last week of squeaky critters for $2.97. They were a decent size for Rotties so Lily scored a few. Here she is becoming acquainted with her new friend, Cow. She has just started showing an interest in her toys and chew bones again. She still looks at us sometimes with a sad, forlorn look on her face, but she is adapting to life without her buddy.

We have taken our first baby steps in possibly getting another dog. The Husband insists on one more Rottie and I insist on a rescue. So we have filled an application with Southern States Rescued Rottweilers.

We still are not quite ready but figured we would at least get the paperwork and interviews out of the way. We would like a puppy, no older than 9 months, as that is what we think Lily will tolerate best. And a male, has to be a little boy. So it could take awhile, but we are in no hurry.

A little over a month ago we found of The Husband needed to have his jaw wired shut for a minimum of 4 weeks. This is due to his lower wisdom teeth never coming up but growing down into the jaw bone. Cycst have formed and the jaw bone itself is almost no existent in certain spots. So wiring it is.

Tomorrow is the big day. Three hours of surgery. Needless to say The Husband is NOT a happy camper. This was his choice of meal........it was delicious.

I never went to the prom. In my junior year of high school I didn't have senior boyfriend to go with. In my senior year I was dating an older guy and he really didn't want to go. He offered but I could tell his heart wasn't really in the offer.

I love to go to Dillard's at prom time and look at the dresses. They have a large selection and are very reasonably priced. My prom was in 1973. I don't think I would have made my dress if I had gone but if I did I may have chosen this one:

I love the full skirt versions of this, especially the black one. A little edgy for prom, but kinda sweet looking too. Would be great with some 4" platform gladiator sandals!

The halter and double strap versions would look good on anyone.

I must still be channeling my inner teen every prom season, I can't seem to stop daydreaming about what I would wear, then or now!

Yesterday we went to Joe Patti's in Pensacola to stock up on fresh fish....yes, we can get fish here but the selection and price is worth the trip to Joe Patti's. The Husband got a new toy a few weeks back....a vacuum sealer. So he is giddy with delight and on a mission to stock the freezer.

Last night we have a dozen oysters on the half-shell and a dozen Rockefeller. Then we had this:

Maguro (tuna) sashimi with edamame and pickled radishes. The white fish is Escobar or white tuna. They gave us a small piece for free when we told them we were doing sushi. It is heavenly, like butter in your mouth. It was all very good. Oh, did I mention that this was just MY plate?

I served up this cocktail:

A Caribbean Cruise. It went okay with it, not as good as Sake or Plum wine would have gone, or even better a Medori Colada. But it was all good!

This is my first attempt at taking my own picture with my new phone. Let me tell you it is much easier to send them to myself rather than transfer them from the camera. It's not the best picture, but then it's not the best camera/phone......but not too bad. Did I mention I really don't like to have my picture taken?

I made this skirt last year. It is NL6898. I wasn't that happy with it and was going to give it away. It was in the Goodwill bag, all tied up and ready to go. But something made me go back and decide to give it and another skirt a second chance.

The last ( and only) time I wore it I kept my top untucked. This time I tucked it in, and added the cardy because it was a little cool at the beachfront. I really liked how it looked this time. You can't see the front pleat detail, but it's there.

I quit wearing my tops tucked in about 8 years ago when menopause started and the weight piled up in front. I didn't want to look down and see that little potbelly, a reminder that I like food too much.......and exercise not enough! But it didn't seem so bad this time...of course the cardi helped a bit.

Another issue with skirts and dresses has bother me personally lately.....I have some patches of spider veins on my legs. And it bothers me. I can't really have anything done about it right now so I've been shying away from skirts and dresses. But they are so cute and cool in the hot summer. Any suggestions? Leg make-up? Bronzer?

All in all, I am glad I saved this little skirt. I hung onto the pattern too, so maybe there's another one in my future.

You Have Entered a 'No Sew Zone'

I wish I had lots of things to show you.....I wish I had anything to show you, but I don't. It just isn't happenin' here.

I did manage to finish my corduroy skirt that I talked about in an earlier post. I also managed to wear it twice before Spring arrived here in full force. I am also almost done with S4182 that I am making in black/white seersucker. I just have to do the buttonhole and sew the facings down.....but I'm not crazy about this long sleeve version as I was about the short sleeved one. I am apathetic about finishing it.

I think I am at a crossroads here with my sewing. I have not been happy with the finished items, I have not been happy with my fabric choices (I live in a small town...online is the choice) and I just don't seem to have the time lately to put into an item. I see so many pretty things in the stores that I can have now and frankly, they fit better.

I was thinking of making a dress for our anniversary dinner next month, but I saw a beautiful one in Belks that is going on sale this week for $43.00. I like the fabric much better than any I have on hand or have seen online. And it would only take a minute to pop over there and try it on.

I am in a slump. Or have lost my 'mojo' if I ever did have it. Sewing at this moment just doesn't excite me. Maybe it's 'spring fever'. Who knows?

Oysters Rockefeller

I've been very lack showing off The Husband's culinary skills of late, so I thought I would tempt you with the yummy Oysters Rockefeller he made for us last night.

He also made some lovely mussels in broth....but my picture just didn't do it justice (I am still getting use to my new camera phone). We are having the remaining dozen oysters a la' natural tonight along with a beautiful piece of redfish wrapped in rice paper and sauteed.

It has been a little over a week since Ed passed away. I really miss him. It's not like I have not lost a pet before, he was the 5th. But I just can't believe I won't ever see him or hug him again. What is it about this dog, what is it about any dog?

He turned me into a complete blubbering fool last Monday when I went into work. Luckily I have a boss who is a big dog person and understood completely.

As I was cleaning this weekend I was reluctant to vacuum, his fur and smell would be gone forever.....how silly is that! I thought I could pick up his food bowl and put it away but I'm not ready yet. I found his favorite toy....it sits here on my desk.

I'm not ready to let go......not yet.

Hello......Is It Me You're Looking For?

Yikes, what happened to January and where was I? Life seems to have gotten in the way, mostly work, work and hmmm, well more work.

I haven't done much sewing. I have a black corduroy skirt I have been working on since before, yes, before Christmas. Really, how long does it take you ask to make a simple skirt? Apparently about a month. I just have the hem to do by hand which I am hoping to get to during one of the football games tomorrow. Then maybe I'll get to wear it once or twice before our weather gets warmer here in Northwestern Florida, where this morning it is 35degrees. ( I know, I know....others have it worse. Actually I am not complaining, I enjoy the colder weather.)

I have been doing a little pattern shopping since it seems like everyone has them on sale. You can never have too many patterns, well, yes I guess you can, but I am not at that point yet.

I am hoping to get a little better sewing with knits this year. I've tried a couple of time to sew with ITY jersey knit with less than stellar results, that fabric is so darn slippery. So this time I want to try my hand with matte jersey and see how that goes.

These are all older patterns, very few of the new ones appealed to me. Simplicity is having a great sale and I stocked up on a few there, but will save those for another post.

Edgrrr Update

He is doing great! We are still doing chemo treatments and getting great results. He is gaining weight, up to 101lbs now and as happy and goofy as ever. We are still keeping our fingers crossed.

Happy New Year to everyone! I can't say that I will miss 2010............a lot of little things happened one right after the other that took it's toll on the The Husband and me, then there was the BP oil spill which did a number on the Gulf Coast region and last but not least there was Eddie's lymphoma.

But there were things to be thankful for in 2010. We got a visit not once but twice from relatives up north. I have a good part-time job that I not only kept in a down industry but got some nice bonuses during peak season, a great year-end one, and a nice raise to boot! We are selling our commercial property in a very down market, for a decent (not great) price. The Husband and I are healthy, Lily is healthy and Eddie is doing great! Can't beat that................

I didn't get as much sewing done this year as I would have liked but I did make a few things this year that I thought were real winners and have worn quite a bit.

Here are my 2010 winners:

McCall's 5248 bathrobe made from Michael Miller cotton. I love this robe!

Simplicity 2917 skirt made from cotton fabric. I wore this skirt all summer. It has so many colors in it, it goes with everything.

McCall 5882 tunic made from cotton. Just love it!

Simplicity 4182 jacket made from cotton. When I first finished this I thought it was just okay, but I ended up loving it and wearing it alot. I have a long sleeve version in the works.

So all in all, it wasn't a great year but it wasn't a total bust either!

May 2011 bring everyone health and happiness!

I thought I would take the time now and wish everyone a very Merry Christmas. We hosting friends for a nice sit down dinner so will be busy all day.

Ed had his 2nd Chemo treatment this past Monday and is doing well. His lymphnodes are back to normal and his white count is also. He is eating like a horse but has only gained 2lbs back. The Vet and staff are optimistic! It will be a Merry Christmas in our house, indeed!

Getting Better Every Day..........

Ed had his first round of chemo this past Monday, his lymphoma is B cell, which is treatable. He is doing good, eating and gaining weight (he was under 95lbs, down from 115lbs). He did pick up a virus at the Vet similar to kennel cough. The poor guy looked like a 6-year old with a runny nose. But he seems to be getting over that AND hopefully has not passed it on to Lily.

We are very pleased with his progress. He has 4 more chemo treatments, this Monday is Cytoxin, which is a baddie but we are hoping he tolerates it well.

Eddie Update

Eddie is doing much better. He is eating good and the swelling in his face and limbs has subsided. He still is a very tired boy getting worn out with a walk around the backyard. But we are encouraged by his improvement. We are hoping that we will learn today what type of Lymphoma he has and the course of treatment. Most definitely we are hoping for the more treatable type.

Our little boy Eddie is very sick. He had emergency surgery to have his enlarged and bleeding spleen removed. He has lymphoma. We don't which kind yet. He's such a sweet boy and a clown. I am heartbroken.

Rainy Days and Football Games (and a Birthday Dinner)

It is finally raining here in the FL panhandle and we can sure use it. That also makes it a great day for watching football without feeling guilty about not being outside doing something. A win/win situation if you ask me.

Yesterday was our friend Kenny's birthday and Mike put out a really nice spread for his best bud.

Of course we had to start off with a cocktail. I made one of Kenny's favorites, Caribbean Cruiser.

The it was time for the cold first course, seared Black Fin tuna (locally caught) with cucumbers, radishes and edamame topped with a spicy mayo and ponzu sauce.

The warm second course picture should be here........but I didn't remember to take it until we were done eating it...oops. Anyway it was delicious Tomato Cream Shrimp Risotto.

Salad course was a simple but tasty Baby Spinach salad with Warm Bacon dressing.

Main course was Braised Beef Shortribs in a Red Wine sauce, homemade Sharp White Cheddar Mac n' Cheese and Fried Brussels Sprouts (individual leaves) with capers and vinegarette. The brussels sprout recipe is courtesy of Chef Michael Symon. These are absolutely delicious! I could not stop eating them.

Okay, we cheated on dessert. We just couldn't decide what to make, we were flummoxed. So we picked up a small Chocolate Fudge birthday cake from Walmart. Let me tell you this was an excellent birthday cake. chocolatey and fudgey, mmmmmmm!

Ed also attended but even though he is fast approaching 8 years old, he still can not contain himself around company. So he enjoys the party from the comfort of his kennel which is placed amid the festivities. He does get to come out and go outside with the boys when they enjoy their cigars.

I LOVE this dress! I really like the View C sleeves and collar but prefer the long darts to the side gather. I think this would be a great holiday dress!

NL6006

Our coat weather down here last from 9:00pm to 9:00am during December and maybe into early January. But a girl still needs a nice coat, and I need this one, both long and short. It's perfect, stylish but simple. Love it.

NL6011

I think this is such great work wardrobe. I like almost every piece, almost, but I think I could learn to like the rosettes.

Three simple patterns......I'm thinking these are the only three I'll ever need.......until next season!

I can't believe it's been over a month since my last post! And I am ashamed to say I don't have much to ~~sew~~ show for it.

I finished NL 6895. It turned out okay, wearable under a cardigan or jacket. The charmeuse was a little bit of a challenge to work with but not as bad as the ITY jersey knits! Not sure I would make it again though.

Then I moved on to B4957:

I've seen this made by several people and it looked so cute. I just used a green cotton print from my stash and while the dress fit nicely it just looked kind of frumpy and blah. So I didn't bother sewing in the zipper and put it aside.

Next up was M5591:

This is another pattern that has been very popular. Here's my version:

I'm just not feeling the love here. Maybe it would look better if I had a head but the frown on my face wasn't very picturesque. I really like the black and white print but it looks so busy here. I'm also not sure this style is very flattering to me, it really accentuates my short waist and thick middle. I tried it with the top out but...uh, uh, no good. I'm a little disappointed and not sure I will feel comfortable wearing it.

I don't have any new projects planned right now. I am tired of summer clothes but it has been so hot here I just can not think of fall/winter wear yet. I did pick up a nice poly suiting for pants at JoAnn's a few weeks ago so I might try to tweak my pants pattern a little more and have another go at that. I also have a few pairs I made earlier in the year that need some readjusting.We'll see.

I have saved the disaster that was M3023 and turned it into a very wearable skirt.

I used S2917 which I have made once before. I love it. It's a great summer skirt. I've already worn it twice, once on the 4th and once to work. I see this skirt getting a workout this summer!

So I am moving on......I just couldn't decide what to make though. I have been going through all my top patterns and associated fabrics and decided to try NL6895:

It seems like a really simple top with a little added interest in the front gathers. I hope it's not too baggy, but if it is, it looks easy enough to taper a little. I am doing the high neck version with the short sleeves from View C.

I decided to try a fabric I have never worked with before, charmeuse. I bought this fabric from Denver Fabrics and the print is a little large, but I thought it would make a good muslin for this top. If it looks good fine, if not that's fine too.

I did read on someone's blog (sorry, can't remember who's) that when working with charmeuse it is best to starch it. So I did, it helps a little but is slipperier than a Chicago politician! Will see how it works out!

Skirting with Disaster

Since the weather here has been extremely hot this summer I thought some nice easy summer skirts would do the trick to keep me cool. Well, both of these projects managed to get my temperature to rise almost to the boiling point!

New Look 6898

This skirt was up first, View E to be exact. I figured since I always cut my patterns at size 12 then add 1/2" to the side seams why not bypass that little exercise and just cut the size 14. Of course the skirt was WAY too large, but surprisingly the wasitband (and yes I did make sure and cut the right size) was too small to fit on the skirt!!! Go figure!?!?

So I took it in 1/4" at each side seam, still too big. Another 1/4" and STILL to big. What the "F"? I had two options at this point - take it a part or consider it done for and move on.

I went with option one, taking it a part and recutting at a size 12. It was still too big with 5/8" seams. Another 1/8" didn't help, but the final 1/4" seamed (ha,ha stupid pun intended) to do the trick. And the waistband which was originally cut at size 14 fit perfectly!!! Again, what the "F".

I found the zipper insertion on the skirt a "PITA" but I can't see any other way of doing it because the waistband has to go before the zipper. Mine came out a little wonky, not too bad, maybe it just takes practice.

At the original length the skirt looked very frumpy on me. I had planned to put a contrasting band along the bottom, but at this point just wanted to get this skirt in the finished column. So I cut 1 1/2" off the bottom, sewed a narrow 1/4 hem, them hand stitched another 1 1/4" hem. It's a little shorter than I normally wear but not too scandalous for a old lady like me, especially in the hot summer.

So here she is, finally:

Would I make another one, I'm not sure at this point. It was a lot fuller than the pattern covered showed. It's okay.

McCall's 3023

After all the trouble with that skirt I decided to go for one that was EASY, really easy. So I turned to McCall's 3023, which is OOP.

Seriously, you can not get much easier than this, two seams, and elastic casing and a hem......what could go wrong?

I chose the shortest version and cut it at the Medium size (12-14). This thing is HUGE!!! And again, much fuller than I thought it would be. And let's not talk about the frump factor, I'm sure part of that was due to the fact it was HUGE!!! I also wasn't crazy about the skinny 1/2" casing, I think it just needs to be a little wider, 3/4" would be better.

So here is where this skirt is at:

I love this cotton print fabric, it has lots of different colors in it so can be worn with many different tops. I think I will just take it a part and use another skirt that I have made several times before, that has a narrow waistband and zipper closure.

I still would like a few more cool cotton skirts for summer, but I think these two are off the list for now.

Lynn's Birthday Dinner

Last September I posted the birthday dinner The Husband did for our friend, Kenny. Last night The Husband put out an equally amazing spread for Kenny's wife, the lovely Lynn's birthday.

To start the festivities off I served "Hairy Sunrise" cocktails....they were very good, but I forgot the picture.

Opening cold appetizer, beef carpaccio served with homemade bread.

Second warm appetizer, ragout of wild mushrooms over homemade polenta.

Salad course, caprese.

Main course, linguine with clams in cream sauce.

Finally, dessert, individual homemade tiramisu.

And the Birthday Girl!

The Husband out did himself, this dinner was as close to perfect as you could get. Even the under $10 wines we threw with this went perfectly. And what can you say when you get to spend the evening with the your bestest friend.....PERFECT!

Oil and Hurricanes

Destin, FL to be exact. We moved here almost 7 years ago.

No doubt about it, it is beautiful. But I would leave it, if I could.

As most of you know a few hundred miles west a disaster occurred. Eleven people lost their lives and the largest oil spill in the nation is on going. Heading this way. To this:

I don't really want to debate who's at fault, who's in charge or whatever. I believe that BP is the best to handle this, not the Government, not the Military.

What scares me more is this, hurricane season started June 1st:

On it's own this is bad....with the oil, this is really, really bad.

Now every morning I check the Tropical Weather report here and the oil spill report here.
What a life!

Today, weather permitting, we will go to the beach.....it will be our first time this year....it may be our last....................

YES, YES, Oh, yes! I have finally made something that I am really, really happy with......so much so that after I finish the skirt I have up next, I will make another version!!!!

But first let's get to the eh, jacket that I made from S4182. I finally finished it earlier this week......

It's not bad, it fits okay, but not sure if I would make another. And since it too hot here already to be wearing anything layered, even a tank top and short sleeved cotton jacket it may not see daylight until NEXT spring! But all in all not too bad!

So the winner is McCall's 5882:

I wasn't sure what to expect from this pattern, I am not usually a fan of tunic tops. But I loved the idea of the contrasting fabrics and had the perfect fabrics in mind. So here is my version:

I just love it. I didn't make any alterations to the pattern but did have to do the seams at about 1/2" rather than 5/8". It was just a little snug, so next time I will add 1/4" to the side seams. Most people might not like the high neck but I love it. Frankly I am tired of showing the world "the girls" when ever I bend over when wearing a vee neck or scoop neck currently in style.

The fabric is a quilting cotton from P&B Fabrics called MOD. I carry it in my online shop The Cotton Loft, I have it in this summer yellow and a spring green. I interlined the top portion with batiste. The facing on this is very narrow, next time I would either just use the batiste as lining or make a contrasting bias for the neck and armholes.

All in all, it was very easy to make, though I do think the 22" zipper was overkill, but I have plenty of zippers so no big deal. I would love to make another top and maybe even the dress version. I have so many fabrics I would love to use I think I could make a whole wardrobe out of this pattern! YEAH!! I am so HAPPY with this!

What is Wrong with this Picture?

Sorry the color is so off, but do you see what is wrong with this? I was sewing down the finally facing when I noticed that this seam was not finished with bias. I don't know how I missed it......I hate when that happens, has it happened to you? I was able to finish the seam with out too much trouble.....I hate ripping stuff out so always look for an easy fix.

With this winner I am off with renewed hope to make a skirt from this pattern: New Look 6898:

I am making View E in a green and yellow floral with a diagonal yellow contrasting band at the hem. Very summery!

This kind of sums up my sewing experiences this year (and late last year, now that I think about it). Of the few items I have managed to make the only one I am truly pleased with and wear is the bathrobe!

In January I made two pairs of pants, from two different patterns. On initial wearing they weren't bad, on the next go round they both seemed baggy and ill fitting, possibly due to changes in my body from daily workouts. Sure I am happy with the fruits of my workout labor......but it is playing havoc with my sewing labor. Both pairs now lie waiting to be altered. They are winter wear, they can wait.

My second attempt to make B5331 ended in a UFO. I'm not sure why, all that work with just the buttonholes to go and I just couldn't look at it anymore. The color just didn't seem right, it was taking to long to finish, I just didn't want it anymore.

My second attempt at the capris from B3717 hasn't gone very well. My first pair was made from 100% cotton and even though was prewashed shrank a little, but the fit was nice. This version was made using a stretch twill, prewashed, plus a little extra added to the sideseams. It turned out to look like jodhpurs, pooffy in the place I least need it! So I took the side seams in at the original seam. They looked better but not great. I don't know maybe I'm hypercritical or maybe the fabric wasn't right, it seemed right when I started out but got stretchier and heavier as time went on. These capris now reside with B5331, in need of a waistband and hemming and I don't know what else to make them right.

The little short sleeve jacket I am making from S4182 is almost done, just sleeves and facings. It's okay, fit isn't too bad although I don't like the gathered bodice in back but it's not horrible. I'm just not loving it, maybe wrong fabric again or the style is too young for me, I just don't know.

I revisited a UFO from last April, S2896 . I needed a dress for a party and thought that since I my body has shifted fat around, it might fit. But no, apparently that only works with the pants I made, the dress was still a little snug and this time pooffy in the stomach......another place I can ill afford any pooffiness. I finished the dress, but still had to go out and buy a new one, which looked great and fit great and only took about 1/2 hour of my life to find.

Here is my frustration, after all the hours and money spent on these items I'm not loving any of them except as I said my bathrobe. I am on a very limited budget and thought I could make some nice garments at reasonable prices, but it's not turning out that way. Working 2 jobs gives me limited sewing time and the time spent sewing has not resulted in much. I'm thinking my money and time would be more well spent at a thrift store or Target!

I don't know, maybe I'm just tired, maybe I just need a break from sewing. Maybe I enjoy the thought of sewing all my own garments, of picking out patterns and fabric....but not the actual process of sewing them all
I don't know I'm just frustrated!

Spring Sewing

There hasn't been much sewing going on here. One of my brothers' and his wife came to visit this past week. It was great, we haven't seen them in 6 years, so there was a lot of catching up to do. They have never been here so there was a lot of sightseeing going on, too!

But things are getting back to normal and I've started two new spring projects. First up is B3717:

I am making View F, the capris. I wanted to make View E the ankle skimmers but I didn't have enough fabric. I've made these before so they should go together fast. I am trying to "refine" the fit a little. We'll see how that works! I am just using a cream stretch twill. I've got all the darts completed so far.

At the same time I am working on S4182:

Also in View F (what the F???)! I know this pattern seems a little youthful for someone of my advanced (haha) age, but I like the lightweight jacket style worn with a tank underneath. Kind of like a summertime cardy. I did add a little length to it so hopefully I won't have a "muffin top" peeking out!

Here is the fabric I am using:

I thought it looked very similar to the fabric used on the pattern cover, only a little softer. I have actually got the top bodice portion done:

I even have the seams finished already!

I would like to get them finished at the same time as they go very well together. Just add a light pink tank and I'm good to go!

His eyes nearly popped outta his head, but I think, I hope he was just funnin' me. I like it but realized as I was standing there modeling it that it didn't have pockets. I'm not a real pocket gal, except when it comes to my bathrobe. A girl's gotta have a place for her kleenex in the morning.

So, I guess it's back to the sewing room to add pockets..........................
